Beginner Strength Training in Shoreline: You Don’t Have to Join a Gym

Maybe you know you should be strength training.

You’ve heard about the benefits of lifting weights. You want to feel stronger, build muscle and take care of your body for the long haul.

There’s just one problem:

You don’t really want to go to a gym.

Walking into a weight room and trying to figure out what to do, how much to lift, which equipment to use and whether you’re doing any of it correctly can feel pretty intimidating.

Here’s the good news: a traditional gym isn’t the only place to strength train.

At Seattle Dance Fitness (SDF) in Shoreline, Washington, we offer instructor-led group strength and resistance-training classes for adults — and you absolutely do not have to dance to take them.

Yes. Even though Dance is right there in our name.

Can Beginners Take Strength Training Classes?

Absolutely.

In fact, a group strength class can be a great place to start because you don’t have to create your own workout.

The instructor does that part for you.

You’ll be guided through the exercises, learn proper movement patterns and have help figuring out what weights and modifications make sense for you.

You don’t need to know gym terminology.

You don’t need to know how much weight you “should” be lifting.

And you certainly don’t need to get stronger before you start strength training.

That would be a little like getting good at dancing before taking your first dance class.

You start where you are.

What Does a Group Strength Training Class Look Like?

That depends on the class, but expect to work.

At Seattle Dance Fitness, our strength and toning classes use equipment such as dumbbells, barbells, resistance and bodyweight exercises to challenge different muscle groups.

You’ll squat. Hinge. Push. Pull. Press. Lunge. Brace. Lift.

And you’ll learn how to make those movements work for your body.

Because the workout is instructor-led, you aren’t wandering around a gym wondering what exercise comes next.

The class has a plan.

Your job is to show up.

What Strength Classes Does Seattle Dance Fitness Offer?

SDF offers several strength-focused formats alongside our dance and cardio classes.

Booty Pump is a full-body strength workout using barbells and weights, with an extra emphasis on building strength through the glutes and lower body.

COMMIT Sculpt combines resistance training and strength work in a music-driven group fitness format.

BootyBarre blends strength, toning and barre-inspired movement for a different kind of muscular challenge.

Our schedule evolves, but the idea stays the same: strength training can be effective, approachable and even fun.

You don’t need a traditional gym environment to get stronger.

Do I Have to Lift Heavy Weights?

“Heavy” is relative.

The right weight is the one that appropriately challenges you while allowing you to perform the movement safely and with good form.

For one person, that might mean starting with very light dumbbells.

Someone else might be ready for a loaded barbell.

Both people can take the same class.

As you become more comfortable with the exercises and your body adapts, you can gradually increase resistance.

That progression is part of how strength is built.

You aren’t competing with the person next to you.

You’re working with the body you brought to class that day.

Is Strength Training Just for Young, Fit People?

Definitely not.

Strength training can be valuable throughout adulthood.

As we get older, maintaining muscle and strength becomes increasingly important for the things we actually want our bodies to keep doing — carrying groceries, climbing stairs, traveling, getting up off the floor, participating in sports and hobbies and simply moving through life with confidence.

You don’t have to be an athlete.

You don’t have to look a certain way.

And there isn’t an age when you suddenly missed your chance to become stronger.

What If I Feel Intimidated by Weight Lifting?

This is one of the reasons we love group strength training.

You aren’t walking into a room alone and trying to figure everything out.

There’s an instructor leading you.

There’s music playing.

There are other people doing the same workout.

Some may have been strength training for years.

Someone else may have picked up a barbell for the first time that morning.

Everyone gets to be where they are.

At SDF, we care a lot more about helping people become comfortable with strength training than creating an environment where everyone already knows what they’re doing.

Do I Have to Take Dance Classes at Seattle Dance Fitness?

No!

This deserves its own section because our name can be a little misleading here.

You can belong to Seattle Dance Fitness without ever taking a dance class.

We love dance. It’s a huge part of who we are.

But SDF has grown into a broader adult group fitness community offering dance, cardio, strength, toning, barre and other ways to move.

Some members mostly dance.

Some mostly lift.

And some have discovered that their favorite combination is both.

There is no dance requirement for entry.

Promise.

Can I Combine Strength Training and Dance Fitness?

Now you’re speaking our language.

Strength training and cardiovascular exercise do different things for your body, which is why many people enjoy including both in their weekly routine.

At SDF, you can take a strength class one day and come back for dance fitness another. Many even take these two types of classes back to back!

For people who want variety, that can make maintaining a consistent fitness routine much more enjoyable.

Your week doesn’t have to look like the same workout repeated over and over again.

Lift some weights.

Dance your face off.

Come back and lift some more.

We support this plan.

What If I Hate Traditional Gyms?

You wouldn’t be the first person to walk into SDF feeling that way.

Not everyone enjoys exercising alone.

Not everyone wants to navigate a room full of machines.

And not everyone finds rows of treadmills particularly inspiring.

Group fitness offers something different.

Someone has already planned the workout. An instructor is there to guide you. Music is playing. Other people are working alongside you.

And eventually, those people start becoming familiar faces.

For many of our students, community is one of the things that keeps them coming back.
