Dance Fitness in Shoreline

If you're looking for a fun workout in Shoreline or North Seattle and the idea of spending an hour on a treadmill doesn't exactly inspire you, dance fitness can be an entirely different way to get moving.

Maybe you love dancing.

Maybe you used to dance years ago and miss it!

Or maybe the words “dance class” make you immediately think, Oh no. I am NOT a dancer.

Good news: you don't have to be a dancer to do dance fitness!

If you're looking for a fun workout in Shoreline or North Seattle and the idea of spending an hour on a treadmill doesn't exactly inspire you, dance fitness can be an entirely different way to get moving.

At Seattle Dance Fitness (SDF) in Shoreline, WA, we believe fitness can be effective without feeling like a chore — and that you don't have to already know how to dance before you walk through our doors!

Here's what to know before trying your first dance fitness class:

What Is Dance Fitness?

Dance fitness lives somewhere between a dance class and a traditional group exercise class.

You're moving to music and following choreography, but the goal isn't to perfect a dance routine or prepare for a performance.

The workout IS the dancing.

Depending on the class, you might find yourself moving to pop, hip hop, afrobeats, dancehall, throwbacks or club music while incorporating movements designed to get your heart rate up and your whole body moving.

Some dance fitness classes are entirely follow-along. Others spend more time breaking down choreography before putting everything together.

That means there are options for people who want to simply move and sweat as well as people who love learning choreography.

Do I Need Dance Experience?

Nope.

Seriously.

One of the biggest misconceptions about adult dance fitness is that everyone else in the room already knows what they're doing.

They don't! They've just been consistent in their attendance!

At Seattle Dance Fitness, our classes include people with years of dance experience, people who danced when they were younger, and people who have never considered themselves dancers at all.

You don't have to get every move.

You don't have to turn the same direction as everyone else.

And you definitely don't need to “practice” before you come.

Your job is to show up and move!

What If I Have Two Left Feet?

Then bring both of them!

Dance fitness gets easier the more you do it. You'll start recognizing movements, learning how instructors cue, anticipating transitions and becoming more comfortable moving to the music.

But none of that has to happen during your first class.

A good beginner-friendly dance fitness environment should make it completely acceptable to modify a movement, march in place for a second, miss a step, laugh and jump back in.

That's exercise, too.

What Kinds of Dance Fitness Classes Does SDF Offer?

Seattle Dance Fitness offers several different adult dance and cardio formats, so “dance fitness” doesn't mean just one type of class.

Our signature Cardio Dance Party (CDP) classes are follow-along dance fitness workouts featuring original choreography set to music including pop, hip hop, afrobeats, dancehall, k-pop and more!

If you like learning choreography, GROOV3 breaks combinations down at a slower tempo before bringing them up to speed, combining the feeling of learning a dance routine with a serious workout.

SDF also offers additional dance and cardio formats throughout the weekly schedule, giving students different ways to move depending on their style, mood and workout goals.

The common thread?

Music, movement, sweat and FUN.

Is Dance Fitness Actually a Workout?

Ohhhhh yes.

Dance fitness can get your heart pumping, challenge coordination and endurance and engage muscles throughout your body.

But one of its biggest advantages may be much simpler:

You might actually want to come back.

Finding movement you enjoy matters.

For people who get bored on cardio machines or have trouble motivating themselves to exercise alone, an instructor, a playlist and a room full of people moving together can completely change the experience.

At SDF, we sometimes joke that fitness is the byproduct.

You're busy dancing, sweating, laughing and trying to figure out which direction everyone just turned — and somehow you got a workout, too.

BAM!

Is SDF a Dance Studio or a Fitness Studio?

A little bit of both — but we're definitely not a traditional dance studio.

Seattle Dance Fitness is an adult group fitness studio with dance at its heart.

In addition to dance and cardio classes, SDF offers strength and resistance-training classes, barre-inspired workouts, stretching and restorative movement.

So one day you might dance.

Another day you might pick up a barbell or dumbbells.

And plenty of our students do both.

You also don't have to take dance classes to be part of SDF. If you're more interested in getting stronger than learning choreography, our strength classes are here for you, too.

What Should I Expect at My First Dance Fitness Class?

First: expect to be new.

That's allowed. And SDF community members as well as instructors do their very best to make you feel welcomed!

Wear comfortable workout clothes and shoes you can move in, bring water, and give yourself permission not to know what you're doing yet.

You may feel a little awkward for the first few songs. That's totally normal!

Then something tends to happen.

You stop worrying quite so much about whether you're doing everything “right.”

You start sweating.

You recognize a move from earlier.

A song you love comes on.

Someone next to you is also completely going the wrong direction.

And suddenly you're just...dancing.

That's the good stuff.
